Last Chance U: Laney, An Unscripted Story Of a College Football Team

Online video streaming giant Netflix is back with another season of its original American documentary web television series Last Chance U. The latest season of this documentary series will focus on Laney College, Oakland, and their college football coach John Beam.

The thing about Last Chance U is that the storyline is not scripted, it is raw and real. Since it is a documentary series, everything that is recorded depends on how the particular college football team is behaving and talking in front of the camera. Nothing is scripted, and the narrative always pops up a question of whether the current subjects of the series will be as compelling as the previous ones or not.

According to reports, Last Chance U: Laney is the final season before the makers move on to cover junior college basketball. The 5th season will be a complete change for the franchise as the show will be leaving behind the story of Independence Community College, Kansas. The ICC college football team was featured two times in season 3 and 4. Jeff Carpenter narrated the backstory of the team.

Football Coach Fails to Uplift Team in Season 3&4

Season 3 showcased coach Jason Brown’s approach in preparing the team and dealing with them. Season 4 showed how the team failed to live up to everyone’s expectations in the pre-season, finishing with a score of 2-8. After the season, Jason Brown was asked to step down from his role as a coach because of his abusive approach in dealing with the players. This probably brought down the morale of the players and cost them games.

The latest season will focus on how Laney College reflects its city, Oakland. The episodes will also show how no living resident in the city pretends to care about the performance of Laney College Eagles. A lot of the filming of season 5 revolves around how people living for generations are no longer able to pay for housing in Oakland.

A Stark Reality Shown Through the Lives of Laney College Football Players

The scenario, as mentioned earlier, will be showcased through the lives of college football players who live in the city. It will be shown how players of the Laney football team do not have the same privileges as compared to players who featured in previous seasons of Last Chance U. The storyline will showcase how these kids from Oakland are choosing affordable options in terms of commuting and housing.

A few Laney players will be shown juggling between part-time jobs, classes, and football to live a ‘normal’ life. These adversities faced by players will make their resolution to do well but will it go in the planned direction? These stories may resemble instances from the past but will any problem allow them to go forward or bring them down forever. Will there be some selfish player in the team wanting all the limelight to himself and collectively bring down the side. We will see it in the episodes that premiere.

The most significant change from the previous two seasons will be the style of coaching players. Brown’s style of teaching was to toughen them up verbally, but Beam will take a completely different approach.

John Beam will ask troubled players to seek consultation with his wife, who gives people mental health treatment whenever necessary as a therapist. He will take a stern approach as well but not to an extent in which he emotionally and mentally batters Laney football players.

So, let’s see if John Beam’s way of teaching football brings about a change in the Laney College football team or the stadiums in Oakland remain near empty and further bring down the morale of the football players.
