MAPPA Has Been at Its Best in 2020

MAPPA has proved itself as a world-class studio in the anime world. The last eight years have been very successful for them as they have collaborated with the likes of Shinichiro Watanabe and have been behind the manga adaptations like Banana Fish and Dororo. In the last decade, it has cemented its position as a studio that can handle any genre. However, 2020 has surpassed all past expectations, and it has become MAPPA’s most productive year so far. With over eight series so far, which includes Attack on Titan: The Final Season, MAPPA is on track to break all records. Although there have been some lows for the studio overall, 2020 has been a phenomenal year.

Manga Adaptations

MAPPA studios have been incredibly successful in manga adaptations. It has been responsible for some of the manga adaptations of all time, and this past winter, it was responsible for the cult classic Dorohedoro. The anime flawlessly captured the manga’s gory tone, and MAPPA again proved why it is one of the best studios in the anime world. The God of High School, the Webtoon adaptation, is also one of MAPPA’s big shows that have done well. Although the incomplete worldbuilding and rushed pacing of the show is criticized by the critics but irrespective of the narrative issues, the show clearly showed that MAPPA studio is one of the best.

Another one of MAPPA’s recent manga adaptations, Jujutsu Kaisen, seems quite promising; it has all the elements of a great anime, from likable characters, fantastic animation to an intense story; it has everything. It is not surprising that it is even considered for the best anime of the year. The recent Episode 7 of the show was trending globally, which speaks volumes about its potential. MAPPA’s animation skills were on display as Gojo Satoru, the most powerful character of Jujutsu Kaisen, flexed his skills.

MAPPA’s Lesser-Known Shows

However, some of the shows made by the studio were not nearly as great. Like Winter’s Uchi Tama, which is an adorable MAPPA series about a character by Sony Creative Products which is designed for selling merchandise. When one imagines that both Winter’s Uchi Tama and Dorohedoro are made by the same studio simultaneously, it is hard to believe. There is a noticeable difference in the quality of animation, and it would be criminal to compare both of them.

Mr. Love: Queen’s Choice is an adaptation of a well-known otome game from China. The series is about evil cults and superpowers with very complicated world-building. It is even criticized for the complex ideas portrayed in it. Since it has four male leads, it is not easy to constantly juggle between them and is an obstruction for consistent storytelling. It is made even harder to understand because of the complicated backstories that often are poorly executed.

However, overall, MAPPA has been exceptional, and it has created some of the best anime of the year. Indeed, some of them were not as good as the fans usually expect from the studio but keeping in mind how troublesome this year has been, they deserve all the praise that they get. So, there is no doubt now that MAPPA studio is now an anime powerhouse that has learned the art of creating the most popular shows. It has also achieved the challenging balance between quantity and quality that most studios fail to achieve.
